| My How Far We've Come
Aerial imagery was invented by a German apothecary named Julius Neubronner. Julius used pigeons to deliver medicine around Kronberg, Germany. He also had an interest in photography and filmmaking.
Neubronner combined his medicinal delivery profession with his interest in photography inventing aerial imagery in 1907 by mounting a tiny camera on one of his medicine delivery pigeons. Neubronner’s German patent application was initially rejected, but then granted in December 1908 after he produced authenticated photographs taken by his pigeon mounted cameras.
He publicized the technique at the 1909 Dresden International Photographic Exhibition, and sold some images as postcards at the Frankfurt International Aviation Exhibition and at the 1910 and 1911 Paris Air Shows.
It was aviation's rapid development that drove pigeon borne imagery into the curiosities of history but not before Neubronner could develop 5 types of aerial imagery specific cameras and instill into the world a photographic technique that lead us to where we are today.
| Who We Are
JAV Imagery LLC was created in 2013 to provide fit for purpose aerial imagery solutions to our client, EagleView Technologies.
We began as a single plane operation based in Alaska and flying the summer imagery seasons of 2014 and ’15. In 2016 we were offered to expand to three 172s and participate in the Lower 48 flying season. After a successful 2016-17 season we joined a select group of vendors to participate in implementation of a new imagery platform flown on Piper Aztecs. In early 2018 JAV established a base in St. George, UT and began acquiring Aztecs. We currently operate 9 Cessna 172s and 2 Cessna 206s. JAV no longer operates Piper Aztecs.
JAV has expanded operations into a new build 90’ x 80’ facility at the St. George Regional Airport (KSGU). We maintain our base in Alaska and fly imagery in the state as requested.
The 2023-24 imagery season kicks off November 1st. Keep an eye on our employment page for opportunities to join us for the 23-24 season.
